Your assignment this week is to find an ELL (English Language Learner) and listen to and document his/her story. You will then share this person’s story in a written essay, framing his/her story within the context of the language acquisition issues we have talked about this semester. You will share your discoveries in a roundtable discussion in the face-to-face session after the essay is due.
This ELL (English Language Learner) can be any level of proficiency. A beginning English learner or someone who is still learning English is fine. In fact, someone who is still navigating their way through the ELL (English Language Learner) experience is preferred. Any native language is fine. Just find someone who has a compelling story and is able to remember and articulate their journey.
You don’t have to look very far to find your informant. Close friend or, you might consider someone that you interact with at work (such as a co-worker) or someone in the community (such as a nail technician).
