Film Analysis: Representation and Cultural Stereotypes. For this film analysis assignment, you will watch one film: Reel Injun: On the Trail of the Hollywood “Indian” (2010, 93 min.)
The analysis of the film should of word essay, responding to the following questions.
1. Explain the historical context of the stereotypes of the “Noble Indian” and the “Savage Indian.” According to the film, why have representations of American Indians in Hollywood changed over time?
2. The film looks at the power of movies to shape audience perceptions of American Indians. What were the major effects of these representations on non-native viewers? What about on native audiences?
3. Do you think your own knowledge of American Indians has been shaped by media representations? Why or why not?
