You need to objectively critique Scream VI the movie, rating its

overall quality and effectiveness.

You are a film critic who is tasked with

• analyzing films for submission to the Sundance Film Festival. You are impartial and a respected expert in your field.

Submit

Your target audience is the committee who decides which films are included in the Sundance Film Festival. This is a group of passionate and expert film professionals.

• While you shouldn’t reference the committee directly in your critique, you should consider what will be valuable to them as they are deciding on the films for the festival.

• Your critique will be more interesting to your audience if you incorporate a critical lens (historical, gender, or economic/ political, see Lesson 03.04)

• Since you are a respected film critic, your analysis of the film will be a key factor in the committee’s decision.

You need to prepare a critique of a horror or suspense film of your choosing in which you

• discuss the film’s narrative elements, including theme, analyzing evidence

• critique the film through a critical lens (gender, feminist, or economic)

• discuss the film’s suspense techniques, analyzing evidence

• Ultimately, you must rate your film on a scale of 1 to 5 stars for effectiveness in narrative and suspense techniques.

• present all of the above ideas in a spoken video or audio presentation. You can choose to include a visual element, but it will neither help nor hurt your grade.

The extent to which you “play the part” of the critic in your presentation is also up to you. 🙂

• There is a template you can use to plan your presentation linked on the next slide.

03.09a Final Project Template

Directions: Use this template to plan your audio or visual presentation for this module’s final project. Overall, you should have 3 parts to your presentation. Read below to understand each part.

Part 1: Rating and Overview 109 *

• Begin by immediately rating your chosen film (1 to 5 stars). The rest of your presentation will explain your rating.

• Include in your introduction a brief summary of the important story elements of the film. Who are the characters?

Where does the action of the film take place? What happens? What do you think the film maker wants you to think, feel or do while watching?

• Are there any critical lenses that seem applicable to the film? Review Lesson 03.04 when you analyzed two speeches from either an economic/political, feminist, or historical lens. Critique the film using one of these Menses.

How does the lens influence your rating of the film? If using a historical lens, how does the time period depicted (or the time period in which the film was produced) affect its interpretation? If using a feminist lens, how does the film depict (or leave out) women? If using an economic lens, how does the film portray poor or underrepresented people groups, positively or negatively?

Write your notes for Part 1 below, addressing all three of the points above.

Part 2: Suspense Techniques 49

Discuss the suspense techniques used in the movie.

Which literary suspense techniques (foreshadowing, flashback imagery, etc.) are present in the film? What are the emotional effects of these techniques on the viewers?

Which techniques specific to film (camera angles, types of shots, soundtrack, and special effects) are used to create suspense? What are the emotional effects of these techniques on the viewers?

Are the techniques used effectively? Why or why not? Be sure to describe specifics from the film in the same way you would quote “textual evidence” in an essay.

Write your notes for Part 2 below, addressing both of the points above.

Part 3: Overall Quality

• Discuss the overall quality of this short film. What are its strengths? What suggestions would you make for improvement? What about the film will you remember most?

Note: it is acceptable for you to refer to yourself (use the first person “I*) in this review.

Write your notes for Part 3 below, addressing both of the points above.

Overall Tips:

Remember the professional reviews you analyzed in the previous lesson. Think about the tone of those reviews and model your tone after those.

• Always refer to specific techniques and their effects, especially in Part 2.

• You can record your review as either an audio or video presentation. Remember that the visual is optional (not required). There are many tools that can help you with your audio or visual presentation, including but not limited to…

• Canva.com (free)

• Youtube.com (free)

• Google Slides with Mote (as an extension in Google Chrome) (free)

• PowerPoint (if you have the software)

The video or audio tool in Canvas (free, in the assignment as a submission option)
