The purpose of this project is to explore the nature of virality by examining a viral trend in which you participated (by viewing, sharing, buying, or any other means). In your essay, be sure to address what made the trend popular in the first place, who participated in it (and why), and what ideological, social, cultural, political, economic, and/or historical factors affected the popularity of the trend. You may also want to consider how one viral trend opens the door for others, and how you see any current trends connected to those of the past.
Once you have selected a viral trend to write about, conduct research to find out what has been said about the trend and its reception–both within its original cultural context and in other forms (parodies, memes), or even other countries. Your research may include various media, including newspaper and magazine articles, as well as blogs, reference materials, academic journals, personal interviews, comments on interactive websites, and so on.
Using the sources you have identified as well as your own analysis of the trend, write an article that describes it, the circumstances in which it arose, and why it “went viral,” and why it is no longer popular (if applicable). Your thesis for this assignment should answer the question “Why did this trend go viral?” Include at least 4 reasons.
In your article, include at least two images (and cite anything you find online!). You may also consider how the trend has been or could be adapted to audiences in different locales. Based on your analysis, also consider the implications of virality for transnational pop culture as a whole.
