Write a 6-page research paper comparing and contrasting Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein with Junji Ito’s Frankenstein in relation to one of the thesis in Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s “Monster Culture (Seven Thesis).” Then, relate your reflections to a contemporary ‘monster’ story, tv show, or comic book of your choice.
Write a 6-page research paper comparing and contrasting Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein with Junji Ito’s Frankenstein in relation to one of the thesis in Jeffrey Jerome Cohen’s “Monster Culture (Seven Thesis).”
Start by picking one of Cohen’s ‘Seven Thesis’ and after summarizing its meaning, use it to frame a comparison and/or contrast with Shelley and Ito — whether its through a character portrait, a series of scenes, an underlying theme, the epistolary or other literary device, ecology and nature, society in relation to ‘the other’, and etc. Let this comparison and/or contrast form your thesis, and find two secondary sources that support this thesis — whether academic articles, podcasts, and/or interviews with academics, writers, or the artists. Root your thesis in observation and direct quotations from at least two corresponding scenes from Shelley’s text, and two panels from Ito’s manga. Ask yourself what Shelley and Ito want to reveal to their readers in the examples you chose and let us know what you think and feel in relation to that. In conclusion, offer us a contemporary example — whether a story, tv show, or comic — and interrelate that back through Cohen’s thesis. In this way you will offer three different versions of Frankenstein and monster culture from three different times. How does Cohen’s thesis apply to all three examples? What sort of monsters might we create in the future? Make an offer of what one might be like based off what you learned from the examples.
