REACTION ESSAY GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: Your edited 6-8 page 2x spaced paper.
– Your essays must employ Microsoft Word & use standard margins, they cannot employ
anything larger than 12-point fonts, you must number your pages, you must separate your
unnumbered title page from your paper’s text, & your title page MUST identify the number of the PROMPT you have answered.
– These papers DO NOT require end or footnotes, but you MUST include an annotated
bibliography [which does NOT count toward the required 6 pages of text]. You can employ a simplified format—author, title & publication date for the bibliography but you must
annotate each entry [briefly comment about it]. If you wish to identify an outside source
that you used specify the author/short title [you can omit subtitles] & cite the page or
pages in a parenthetical note [e.g. Noam Chomsky, Linguistics, pp. 23-25]. If you cite from the same source again just use author/page {s} e.g. Chomsky, p. 79. You can omit
formalities like Ibid, Op.cit. or Loc. cit]. However, if you choose to provide formal notes
submit them according to the Chicago Manual of Style format [For guidance please
consult:
http://www.wsulibs.wsu.edu/electric/quickguides/docs/citation_style_guides.html]. I will
ADD 3 points to any paper that properly employs formal bibliographic or end or footnote
formats.
– You must submit an edited draft of YOUR essay by utilizing the “Track Changes”
feature under Review in M/S Word. This will ensure that you produce a paper that
genuinely reflects your abilities. It will also better enable me to gauge the effort you invested in thinking & writing about your chosen PROMPT.
[2] What roles do municipalities, state governments, local & state school boards, state
boards of education, teachers’ unions & parent [or other activist] groups play in failing to
capably educate the nation’s children. Consider, for example, political agendas, mandated, standardized testing, curricular issues [including debates over what to teach & what skills or abilities to prioritize], & instructor flight. Finally, how do federal Department of Education rules impact the states & localities?
