What is the value of art? Sociologists have primarily analyzed art as a cultural practice that can
offer insights about larger society. In this view art becomes a reflection of the material and/or
symbolic conditions of our world, an artifact that gives clues to the functioning of a social structure.
Art affords us a way to share our experiences
Art gives us a way to relate to others
Art simultaneously reflects and shapes society
Art transcends language to communicate ideas
What is the role of the artist? Artists provide creative, intellectual and emotional insights
into society at large, impacting society and challenging the status quo.
Artists create possibilities.
What do artists do? Creative thinkers and makers provide their communities with stimulation,
interaction, and inspiration, but they also give thoughtful critique to our political, economic,
and social systems — pushing communities to engage thoughtfully and make steps
Do artists work alone? Historically there is a myth that people are born with artistic talent.
But, in actuality art needs other people to be produced. Creativity isn’t a solely solo pursuit,
it’s cumulative and collaborative
Do artists have a responsibility? Artists are cultural producers who shape mass opinion.
Artists use materials and create conditions that alter our environment and senses. Their
influence is profound.
