Directions from the professor
1. Incorporate at least 5 reputable sources into your general essay.
2. Use a variety of sources (at least 3 types). Choose from the following types of sources:
-Online databases (Ebsco, SIRS, Infobase, CQ Researcher)
-E-books
-Reputable Online Source from Google Scholar. Don’t just do a regular Google search! This is better.
-You can check Pew Research too.
-Recent books and pamphlets
You will be graded on your use of a variety of these types of sources. Using ONLY websites is NOT an option. Make sure your sources support your specific points and do not simply touch on your broad topic in general. The research sources are used to enhance and strengthen your arguments and explanations.
ALSO, MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING RECENT SOURCES (NO MORE THAN 3-5 YEARS OLD OR ONE YEAR FOR STATS) THAT SPECIFICALLY DISCUSS THE SUBTOPICS IN YOUR ESSAY. IF YOU FIND OUT WHAT THEY ARE DOING IN CHINA, WE DON’T CARE (UNLESS YOUR ORIGINAL ESSAY MENTIONED CHINA).
3. Use at least one direct quote, one summary, and one paraphrase in your essay. Direct quoting should be reserved for statistics or a unique quote from an expert.
Many considerations need to be made when writing an argument essay. The main thing is to be able to clearly define and describe your audience and put yourself in their shoes. You are their voice in this essay. Sometimes that’s difficult. However, if you have your two-sided list from pre-writing, you’re well on your way. (Refering to the Rebuttal Example
The first three body paragraphs are relatively simple. Each topic sentence is a reason for your stance on your chosen topic. However, body paragraph IV is more complicated. You not only need to define your audience and support their stance, but you also need to come back toward the end of that paragraph and refute their points.
If you use this form, you’ll easily be able to determine if you’re “covering all the bases” in this important paragraph. Speaking of important, it is! You ARE the voice of your opposition in this last body paragraph. Your job is to make their voice heard. Don’t be too lax or general with this paragraph. This will be an especially lengthy paragraph due to all the parts.
