Instructions
- In a 5-7 page essay, take a stand on a social issue discussed in The Declaration of Independence or the Declaration of Sentiments, or the “I Have a Dream” speech. ( Choose One )
- Read ( or listen to a video ) of these sources carefully and identify key ideas.
- Include at least three sources that you use in identifying and supporting your argument
Use no more than three sources. Do not rely heavily on research. I want you to think through the topic for yourself and let your opinion dominate. You may use a sentence or two from other sources to support your argument, but your voice should be the dominant one in the essay.
Before the conclusion, include a paragraph that contains the counter-argument. In other words, what would others say who do not believe as you do? Summarize the opposition point of view, but follow-up reinforcing your point of view. Exmaple: “Although many people still believe that abortion is wrong, most have accepted that a woman has the right to control her own body. This includes the right to abortion.”
Younr stating the opposition point of view shows that you are fair-minded, but that you still have strong opinions based upon what is right for society.
