General Steps to the Argument Essay
#1 Introduce a sharply focused thesis (for a 1,500-word investigation) clearly states what specific point you will argue. Remember, a properly focused thesis clarifies that your discussion will require a thorough investigation of your subject.
#2 List ALL counterpoints in paragraph two so readers are aware you will be addressing primary disagreements that they might have with your argument.
#3 Reintroduce each counterpoint, clarify each counterpoint, and then refute each counterpoint. Remember, in order to refute opposing viewpoints, you must first acknowledge that you understand opposing viewpoints; therefore, you must research/source opposing counterpoints to prove that you understand why some people resist your argument. Such research illustrates your critical thinking skills.
#4 Add “new ideas” if you need them. To assist your argument, you might have details that weren’t applicable while you were refuting the counterpoints. If so, introduce as many paragraphs of “new ideas” as necessary after refuting all the counterpoints. If you don’t have “new ideas” pertinent to your argument (details required to be successful for your argument), don’t add any “new ideas.”.
