Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.IDEA provides regulations and guidelines for professional practice when developing IEP goals in the IEP. Goals must be appropriate and align with the PLAAFP. Goals should be aligned with age appropriate academic standards also. The goals will guide the instructional decisions made by the team of professionals working with the student. If goals are not specific and measurable, teams will not be able to adequately meet the requirements for progress monitoring required by law. If specific, measurable goals are written correctly, it will be easier to design appropriate data collection tools, monitor progress or lack of progress, and modify instructional decisions and accommodations to support the student. There are five specific components of measurable goals. At times, a team may decide to break down goals into even smaller parts. LEA teams use goals and short-term benchmarks, but this is not a requirement of IDEA.
