INTRODUCTION:
Hook- to engage the reader from the start
Context about the topic- to help us understand the thesis
Thesis sentence- one sentence that states your stance and solution using clear, persuasive language.
BODY PARAGRAPHS:
Several body paragraphs broken up into sections-each section should have a claim as the topic sentence. Claims are reasons the solution in the thesis should be implemented. One section should begin with a counterclaim from another perspective on the debatable solution.
Concession/Qualifier/Counterargument paragraph should introduce the other perspective, give a concession, a qualifier and a counterargument. Reminder- stances are not right or wrong- they are just different perspectives. Treat them as such. By the end of the paragraph, we should not be confused about your stance, so be sure to come back to why your stance is a better option and explain why in the counterargument.
After each piece of evidence, thorough explanation is required to show how the piece of evidence proves the claim. Do not stack evidence or begin a paragraph with a summary of the resource. Not everything from your annotations belongs in your essay. Carefully select only the sentences that will support your claims.
