Requirements:
Complete each of the following 5 parts. Review all aspects of the speech including the verbal and non-verbaltechniques, audience, setting, and use of audio/visuals. Watch the speech several times and take detailednotes on what you see and hear.
1. Speech Selection & the “Big Picture”:Why did you select the speech you chose to view? What did you find appealing about it?Summarize your prior knowledge of this topic before viewing.Why is this speech relevant—what are the important issues that affect people? Why should people careabout this issue?
2. Evaluation of the Message & Audience:What is the speaker’s central idea and residual message?In what ways does the speaker use an audience-centered approach? What elements of the speechindicate a connection to the audience?What is the bias of the speaker? What does he/she assume that the audience knows about the topic?Which views does he/she assume that the audience has toward the topic?
3. Rhetorical Appeals:Ethos: How does the speaker develop credibility during the speech? What does he/she do to establishtrust with the audience?Logos: What type(s) of evidence and/or reasoning does the speaker use? Include at least one specificexample, as covered in the following Lumen Learning items:o “Using Examples,” “Using Statistics,” and “Using Testimony”Where can you identify an emotional appeal to the audience?
4. Use of Language & Delivery:Review the Lumen Learning readings “Constructing Clear & Vivid Messages” and “Using StylizedLanguage.” In what ways does the speaker use the techniques listed in these readings? (Provide at least2 examples.)Review the Lumen Learning reading “Vocal Aspects of Delivery.” How are the elements covered inthis reading used to develop the message? (Provide at least 2 examples.)
5. Making Connections:Locate an additional article on the topic of the speech. It should be substantial enough to make youmore informed on the topic and be from a reasonable credible source.Provide a summary of your findings. What new information did you learn from it? How does it confirmor challenge your perspective on the topic based on your prior knowledge and content of the speech?
