Essay Assignment;
Write an Essay that raises a problem and then offers a proposed solution(solutions) to that problem.
Introduction: An introduction that grabs your audience’s attention and introduces the problem.
• Thesis Statement: Your introduction should end with an assertive thesis statement that states the solution to the problem.
• Essay Body (Demonstrate the Problem’s
Seriousness): Your introduction should then be followed by 1 -3 paragraphs that describe the seriousness of the problem. Each of these body paragraphs needs to develop a reason as to why the problem needs a solution. Begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence that states the argument to be made in that paragraph. Then develop the idea stated in the topic sentence through a combination of detailed explanations and examples.
• Essay Body (Describe the Proposed Solution): Once you have demonstrated the seriousness of the problem, you then need 2 – 3 paragraphs that describe the proposed solution. Each of these paragraphs needs to describe as aspect of the solution. Begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence that states the argument to be made in that paragraph. Then develop the idea stated in the topic sentence through a combination of detailed explanations and examples.
•Counterargument (Refute Objections): Your essay should include at least one counterargument paragraph where you anticipate objections to your proposed solutions and either accommodate legitimate objections or refute illegitimate objections. Often objections to proposed solutions are related to the cost of the solution. When in doubt, argue that the cost is worth it.
• Sources: You should include a minimum of four secondary sources in your essay.
•Conclusion: End your essay with a concluding paragraph that briefly restates the main points made in your essay and ends with an expanded thought that urges action on your solution.
DOCUMENTATION;
When using secondary sources, make sure that you follow the American Psychological Association (APA) 7th ed. style of attribution. This means parenthetical citations within the text (Lutz, 1986, p. 33) and APA 7th edition references citations (example below) on a references page at the end of the essay.
