prove the artistic movement is associated with your chosen artwork. And you must’ve so using specific evidence.

For this assignment, you will utilize the art historical skills acquired in class to analyze a work of art in a typed, academic essay of 2000—2500 words. In your paper, first state which artistic movement discussed in class (included below) is associated with your chosen work. Artworks must be from a timeframe of

Select one of these artistic movements discussed in class:

  • 19th-Century Art in Europe and the United States
  • Early Photography, Realism, Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism
  • Post-Impressionism
  • Symbolism
  • Cubism
  • Abstraction
  • Modern Art in Europe and the Americas
  • Post-1950s International Modern Art
  • Contemporary Art: Post – 1990’s

The purpose of this paper is to provethat this artistic movement is associated with your chosen artwork, and you must do so using specific evidence (discussed below).

1.) Visually analyze your chosen work, including the work’s visual elements and any additional conventions associated with the work’s particular artistic movement In terms of the work’s visual elements, include where the visual elements are located in the work of art, and how the artist is using these visual elements in the work to create a certain mood, etc. Consider visual elements such as line, color, shape, and space. Be sure to look over the 2D and/or 3D visual analysis handouts we discussed at the beginning of the semester to help you with your analysis.

2.) Analyze how the work reflects the events happening simultaneously when the artwork was created, such as any relevant wars, philosophies, and/or religious ideas (the context of the artwork). Are these events reflected in the subject matter? Does your chosen work appear to have been made due to certain events? For help on this section, refer to your class notes and textbook information. Often, museum wall labels and/or websites have information that describes the context of your chosen work. These historical events must correspond to the artistic movement of your chosen work.

3.) Finally, compare your chosen artwork with an artwork previously discussed in class from the same artistic movement. The purpose of this comparison is to help justifywhy you selected a particular artistic movement to correspond to your chosen artwork. Consider such items as visual elements, historical events, and/or the works’ subject matter when comparing these two works. Be sure to pick a work discussed in class that will allow you to write a lengthy comparison.
