- Select your outline format (point by point or whole to whole) so that you will know the structure of your essay.
- Use one of the following structures to outline your essay:
- You may use a conventional outline form and revise it to fit the structure you have selected.
- You will have exactly five paragraphs for point by point.
- You will have exactly four paragraphs for whole to whole.
- Your thesis statement should follow one of these formats:
- A and B are similar because of _______, but they are surprisingly different because of __________, ______________, and ___________.
- Or
- A and B are different because of _______________, but they are surprisingly similar because of _________, ______________, and ____________.
- Be sure that you have A and B, a stance on the topic, and three areas of comparison OR contrast that will be discussed in the body of the essay.

The essay should contain:

- The appropriate number of body paragraphs that address the supporting details with specific evidence using the selected comparison and contrast essay structure;
- Each body paragraph should contain a minimum of one correctly cited quote, summary, or paraphrase from an appropriate source;
- A conclusion paragraph that summarizes the thesis statement and mentions the supporting details, along with a graceful component that wraps up the main theme of the essay.
- The essay will be evaluated in terms of unity, support, coherence, and sentence skills. Be sure to use 9th edition MLA formatting.
