Verbal
language is not the only form of communication. Communication involves
nonverbal behaviors, all behaviors that occur during communication that do not
include verbal language. These include facial expressions, nonverbal vocal cues
(tone of voice, pitch, intonation, pauses, silence), gestures, body postures,
interpersonal distance, touching behaviors, gaze and visual attention, and the
like. In short, all our nonverbal behaviors also form essential communication
channels, including intercultural communication. Cultures develop norms for
appropriate nonverbal behaviors, such as gesturing, interpersonal space, and
touch. So, what happens when those norms are violated?
In a
500-word paper using APA-style in-text citations,
design a study to examine people’s reactions to norm violations of any
nonverbal behavior.
