language change among traditionally disadvantaged language groups in
California. The student will choose a language to investigate from Native American
or immigrant groups from a list provided by the instructor -
§ What is a traditionally disadvantaged language group?
§ Population with a language other than English as part of their culture and identity
§ Have faced persecution or prejudice in regards to language use
§ Their language may have undergone change or loss of speakers due to minority status
§ Specific to the United States:
§ For example, while Spanish is a major world language, Spanish speakers of Central and South
American origin and decent have faced discrimination and worse in the United States. (Spanish
will be used as an example in class, so you can’t pick that one.) -
§ Possible Native American Languages:
§ Achumawi, Cahuilla, Central Pomo, Central Sierra Miwok, Chemehuevi, Eastern Pomo,
Hupa, Karuk, Kashaya, Kawaiisu, Konkow, Kumeyaay, Lake Miwok, Maidu, Maricopa,
Mojave, Mono, Northern Paiut, Northern Sierra Miwok, Panamint, Quechan, Southern
Pomo, Southern Sierra Miwok, Tolowa, Tubatulabal, Washo, Yokuts, Yurok
§ Note: For languages on this list, be sure it has not already disappeared
§ Seek primary sources, written by members of the culture or language group
