Folks, our third and final essay will focus on the way that film and tv analyze “social monsters” (anxieties shared by large numbers of people).
Series like, Black Mirror, focus on the fear of technology, and movies like, “Get Out,” dive deeply into social concerns about race.
These are not the only shows or films to use their platforms for intelligent discussions of these social monsters. The tradition is as old as the medium itself.
Silent films like “The Great Train Robbery,” released in 1903, evidence our fascination with and fear of crime and lawlessness.
Like any story, myth, or piece of art, film and tv are fictional (I am excluding documentaries and reality tv) spaces within which it safe to ask questions about things that scare us.
Your job for the third essay is to first, choose a film or an episode of a television series, and second, identify its monster (this can be figurative or metaphorical), and third, analyze the film or episode’s use of that monster to discuss a social fear or anxiety.Identify the film or television episode you will analyze; how does the film (or how do the films) use Monsters to symbolically discuss social fears or anxieties?
