Over this semester, we have explored and discussed the rich, complex and complicated subject of Black Women’s Studies, in our successful endeavor to render the historically invisible, visible. Our classwork was based on a set of theories that form the foundation of Black Women’s Studies (i.e. the Metalanguage of Race, the Torch Theory of Civilization, and the Banking Concept); as well as historical examples of the way(s) the constructions of race, gender, and class intimately informed every aspect of Black Women’s and Women of Color’s lives (i.e. property owning free Black women in the (slave) South, the cosmetics industry and the cultural construction of gender, and antebellum working class subsistence). These theories continue to hold powerful contemporary relevance.
For your final essay, choose a contemporary example of how the constructions of race, gender and class continue to intimately inform Black life and peoples of color. Yes, that includes men too. It can be a newspaper or journal article, or current event. Clearly identify which particular theories and historical events, concepts and terms we’ve discussed apply to your contemporary example. 5 page minimum, the Cover Page and Bibliography do NOT count as pages. Your final essay is due: Friday 12
