In this essay, you will formulate a proposed research project to study a specific information systems phenomenon. The aim of the assessment is to develop your skills at identifying a relevant information systems related problem to investigate, evaluating appropriate theory to inform the investigation, and developing a proposed empirical study to contribute new insights on this problem.
Similar to the previous essay, you may choose any information systems related phenomenon to work on, as long as you propose an original empirical research project that is practically feasible to conduct and has expected knowledge and practical contributions. You are encouraged to choose a phenomenon that you are genuinely interested in. The proposed study should not be a replication of a study already conducted in published and unpublished works. In addition, the proposed study can be executed over a reasonable period of time (e.g., 1-2 years). All references must be cited appropriately in the text and include as a list of references at the end of the essay.
This essay should cover the following areas:
- Introduction: Describe the phenomenon and explain with supporting arguments and evidence why this phenomenon is important to investigate from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Conclude with specific research questions you plan to address in the proposed study.
- Literature review: Provide a concise description of βwhat we already knowβ about this phenomenon and position your proposed study in the threads of conversation in the literature. You need to explain how your study will build on previous research to deepen our understanding on the phenomenon.
- Theories: Identify and describe the theory or theoretical concepts that you plan to use to inform and guide the proposed study. Explain their core arguments and how they can address your
- Expected contributions: Provide a concise description of the expected knowledge and practical contributions of the study.
Your essay will be assessed on the following criteria:
- Research problem is well justified and worthy of an empirical study
- Relevant literature is summarised and positions the proposed study
- Appropriate theory is evaluated to address the research question(s)
- Important theoretical and practical insights will be generated
- Essay is well-structured and written to a high academic standard
- Information sources are accurately cited and referenced
