Hot Buttons –  Recognizing your hot buttons and how your reactions to children’s behaviors can delay the development of appropriate prosocial skills.
This week’s discussion board brings us back to the Pyramid Model and an activity that helps us understand how our reactions to children’s behaviors can hinder our ability to best support them in their skill development. Download the attached sheet and follow the directions of the activity.  A few pointers as you progress through the form:
  • 1.  examples of behaviors may be hitting, biting, tattling, whining, etc.
  • 2.  examples of emotions you feel are: frustrated, annoyed, avoidant, etc.
  • 3.  be honest in how you respond to children…we can all think of ways how we could have responded better, but the idea of this exercise is to look at your true response and how it affects the relationship.  For example, my reaction to tattling is avoidance…so my immediate response makes me want to just walk away from the child.
  • 4.  the effect of my response of avoidance is that the child gets no support from me.  The child does not learn anything from that interaction.
  • 5.  the effect on the family is that I have no strategy to share with the family in terms of this behavior because I avoid it and sweep it under the rug.
Complete the form and then share your thoughts on the activity with your peers.
1. Share one hot button with your peers and how it plays out in the activity.
2.  Share its effect on your relationship with the child.
3.  Finally, share two strategies that you could use to prepare for a better reaction to the behavior.  How might you prepare yourself?
Please add a relevant faith integration component, quotes, and/or other outside research for full credit.
Submit your initial post no later than Friday and then respond to the postings of at least two other classmates by Sunday night.
An important note on formatting for the discussion boards in this class:
Formatting requirements for discussion board postings are somewhat more relaxed than a traditional assignment, but some basic standards are requested for professionalism and the convenience of your classmates.
*It is recommended that you compose your posting in a word document with regular font and spacing so you have a copy (just in case!) and so you can use spell and grammar check. However, when it is complete please do not attach it to the discussion board, but copy and paste it instead.
*Posts are expected to be a minimum of 250 words.  Be sure to post your submission into the text box and do not put it in as an attachment (unless the post asks you to specifically add an attachment).
*Also, you are not required to create a reference page if you are using your textbooks for the course as long as you make it clear which text you are using. If, however, you include information from a source other than your textbooks you should provide a reference for that source at the end of your posting.
