explain whether or not you believe polls are an effective method for politicians and political parties to learn more about the people who will be voting for them
Directions: This Activity is
divided into two parts. (I only need you to do part 2.)
Part 1: Create your own poll to measure public
opinion. Interview as many friends, family members, etc. as you can. You
could also post your poll questions on social media and ask people to
complete it there. Include the following questions:
On a scale of
1-5, with 1 being the least effective and 5 being the most effective,
how effective do you think the current President is?
On a scale of
1-5, with 1 being the least effective and 5 being the most effective,
how effective do you think the current Congress is?
On a scale of
1-5, with 1 being very disinterested and 5 being very interested, how
interested are you in politics?
On a scale of
1-5, with 1 being very unlikely and 5 being very likely, how likely are
you to vote in the next presidential election?
On a scale of
1-5, with 1 being very unimportant and 5 being very important, how
important do you think it is to vote?โ
Part
2: When you have finished your poll, use the Text Editor and the Writing
Process to write an essay in which you summarize your findings and explain
whether or not you believe polls are an effective method for politicians and
political parties to learn more about the people who will be voting for them.
Consider the following questions before you begin:
Did most
people think the President was effective? What about Congress?
Are the
people you talked to interested in politics?
Do you think
the majority of them will vote in the next election, or is voting not
important to them?
Do you think
polls are effective? Why or why not?
Review
the grading rubric that accompanies this Activity before you begin so you
know what will be expected for a superior essay.
I only need you to do part 2.
Professor Kathy Dunn commented:
Essays should be in five paragraph formats with
Introduction, supporting and conclusion paragraphs. Refer to the grading rubric
so you know what will be expected for a superior essay. Review punctuation as
well.
This
is the essay I wrote but did not pass. Follow the professorโs comment
highlighted above. Feel free to use and rewrite:
It
was generally believed that neither the president nor the congress was
effective. This was due to a lack of collaboration between the two branches of
government and gridlock. Neither branch was willing to compromise or work
together, which led to an inability to pass legislation or make meaningful
policy changes. A 50/50 split was observed between those interested in politics
and those who were not. From what was said, this gridlock created an
environment of frustration and mistrust among us Americans, with many feeling
their voices were not being heard. As a result, people felt that their opinions
were not represented in government, further escalating the political divide. In
consequence, politics participation decreased, and voter turnout decreased.
There were only half of my interviewers who planned to vote in the upcoming
elections, but 100% of them emphasized the importance of voting. This indicates
that people may feel that their votes no longer matter, and their voices are
not heard. Additionally, it may be due to a lack of trust in the government or
the political system, which can lead to disillusionment and apathy.
