In a 1500-2000 word thesis-driven and unified essay, compose an argument in response to the
following prompt:
EVALUATE TO WHAT EXTENT SOME INSTITUTION IN THE UNITED STATES
TODAY EFFECTIVELY EDUCATES (OR FAILS TO EDUCATE) A GROUP OF
PEOPLE TO BE PREPARED TO NAVIGATE OUR CURRENT MEDIA
ENVIRONMENT IN TERMS OF ACCURATELY IDENTIFYING MIS- AND
DISINFORMATION. BE SURE TO DRAW ON CONCRETE EXAMPLES FROM
CURRENT EVENTS AND NEWS AS SUPPORT FOR YOUR EVALUATION. MAKE
SURE THAT ALL SUPPORT YOU PROVIDE STANDS UP TO THE EVIDENTIARY
REQUIREMENTS OF THE ACADEMIC DISCOURSE COMMUNITY.
The most obvious choice for an institution in the United States is some variation on the education
system. If you choose that institution, be sure to specify which level or levels you are including.
However, youβre not limited to educational institutions;
with prior instructor consent
, you may
select a different institution outside of formal educational institutions.
Final drafts must also meet the following requirements:
You must make use of at least three outside sources, two of which must be readings assigned by
your instructor. One of your outside sources must be a news report of some kind that you use as
an example to support your arguments about mis- and disinformation. You may use more source
than the minimums listed above; however, essays that fail to make the minimum will have their
grades penalized.
The final draft must avoid all five-paragraph style pitfalls. Your thesis should be a synthesis of
your main argument that both avoids lists and avoids being overly broad. Each paragraph should
have a claim-based topic sentence that connects the content of that paragraph to the thesis of the
essay as a whole.
Citations should be MLA 9th
edition, along with the works cited (or, alternatively, the works
consulted) page and overall formatting.
