1. (nicole) Gardner believes that intelligence can be broken down into several parts which contributes to the whole person. The 9 intelligences define a capacity, not a learning style. How I plan to cultivate these 9 intelligences into my classroom is as follows.
1. Linguistic Intelligence. This is comprehending words while reading, writing and speaking. In my class the children can’t read or write as of yet so I read to them a lot. This also encourages speech as we discuss the book and different things that relate to the book.
2. Musical Intelligence. This introduces children to music so they can appreciate and perform musical activities. In my classroom we sing songs on a daily basis. We also have music time where the children take out instruments and we sometimes have a parade or we just play music and they try to match their music to the actual music. It is very fun and the children look forward to this activity everyday,
3. Logical- Mathematical Intelligence. This is sequencing, counting, problem solving by using the ability to reason and analyze, My children love math. They love counting and they love numbers. They love numbers more than their alphabet. They love to add numbers and they love to count and circle numbers on worksheets. What I found really helps with sequencing numbers is when the children put the numbers in order to form a picture, Example of this is when we made lemonade. I had a picture of a lemonade stand and they had to glue numbers 1-10 on a piece of construction paper next to one another to form the picture. I thought I hit Lotto with this activity because they had such a blast learning and doing it.
4. Spatial Intelligence. Being aware of your surroundings. Manipulating things to be creative, putting things together. Some activities I use for Spatial intelligence is puzzle time, painting, lacing, play dog, and mold. These are hand eye coordination activities and also includes learning to tie their shoes.
5. Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence. Moving your body. following direction to movement. In my classroom we learn dances. My kids favorite is the YMCA and the chicken dance. We are working on the electric slide and the Macarena.
6. Intrapersonal Intelligence. Understanding your emotions. Understanding pain and pleasure, likes and dislikes. Learning about your inner self. The activity I do that falls into this is meditation and yoga. I have the children sit on the carpet, I put music on for meditation, shut the lights out and have them close their eyes. I instruct them to listen to the music and focus on the music. Telling them to focus on the music really helps because their little brains are all over the place lol. For yoga we sit on the carpet and put on music but there is a lot of talking and complaining that goes on. I can’t do this too long because their attention span is short but it is definitely a class favorite.
7. Interpersonal Intelligence. The ability to interact with others, making friendships, recognizing others emotions and moods. The activity I use in my classroom that relates to this is my dramatic play area. In dramatic play the children learn how to interact, they learn about each other, they recognize feelings and there are definitely emotions that fly high especially when one take a toy from another. They learn how to use their language here and identify each others moods.
8. Naturalistic Intelligence. The natural world. Nature. We love nature in my classroom. The children water the class plants, we will be growing ladybugs, tadpoles, butterflies and we made a rock garden. We love nature hikes and when we are outside we are learning about nature and how important it is to connect with it.
9. Spiritual/Existential Intelligence. Bringing the world into the eyes of a child. Asking questions. In my classroom during circle time we have question of the day. The children are sitting down and I have a piece of paper. I ask the children a question and then I have them think about their answers. I then call them up one by one and they tell me their answer and I record it. When we are all done, I will have them stand up and share their answer with the class. If they forget, I have it written down. This is an awesome activity for the children to participate in because it builds on their answers. For example. One of the questions was Do you like cookies and if so what is your favorite flavor. One girl told me yes and peanut butter. When she shared her answer with the class, another child said I love peanut butter also, what kind of peanut butter do you like to eat and then all the kids love peanut butter and well I’m sure you know how the rest goes.
