Watch Dover Kosashvili’s 2010 film The Duel (it’s here on Youtube -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5w9tTtZjqkw, though probably better quality if you’ve got Amazon Prime). Compare the adaptation to Chekhov’s source material (the novella) and make an argument: do you find the 2010 film successfully adapts Chekhov’s novella? Narrow it down to 1 elements/scenes/themes/character (arcs) you want to compare across the mediums, then write about that specific thing in the book and in the film and draw an interpretive conclusion — was this creative choice appropriate, was this a justified difference, or did this miss the point of the text, in your opinion? And of course explain why. The ‘why’ should be in your thesis.
1. First, illustrate or describe the difference (that is, concisely depict the film scene in 1-2 sentences, and then give a short quotation and interpretation of the Chekhov text which differs from it). This can be your first paragraph. Some summary is permitted here but not much — the focus should be on which specific difference you will analyze.
2. Then provide some insight or analysis on how this difference leads to a different interpretation of the story or characters in the film — as opposed to the text. In other words, what effect does this difference have on the story? This is the main thrust of the paper and you should dedicate at least a page to this. Focus and cut out all extra words–that means yes, you must reread and revise.
You do not need to use any outside texts, only the Chekhov novel the duel we read for class and the 2010 film.
Please use specific examples from the text, cite the pages, and explain the quote. Along with this, please use specifc scenes from the movie (Ex: random example here (Minutes 13-20)).
