identify one article outlining suggested COVID19 responses (or another public health issue) from the online media site https://theconversation.com/au/search?q=covid+response&sort=relevancy&language=en&date=all&date_from=&date_to=
and provide a critical review of the article, linking back to the health and promotion principles.
- Distinguish between behavioural and social determinants-oriented approaches to health promotion and the manner in which differing perspectives shape understandings of responses and approaches to health promotion.
- Demonstrate that you can reference and cite professionally.
- Develop your skills in using quality academic sources to construct an academic argument/response.
- An article that uses a behaviour change lens or approach
- OR
- One that uses a social determinants lens or approach
The assessment addresses the following course objectives (key parts of objective bolded):
CO2. Identify health promotion strategies for reducing health inequities and promoting population health.
CO3. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of theory in health promotion.
CO5. Critically appraise (health promotion) interventions and evaluations.
In 600-700 words summarise the key points (topic, main points, conclusions) of the article and why you judge it to take a behaviour change or social determinants approach to Health Promotion, linking your summary to literature including the Ottawa Charter. Your discussion must include internationally recognised theories and models relevant to health promotion strategies and programs. Most of the 600-700 words will be taken up by the discussion of why you judge it to take a behaviour change or social determinants approach.
Then critically analyse the article, responding to the following questions and linking to relevant literature to support your responses (another 600-700 words).
- Who is the intended audience (e.g. general public, level of education/literacy, academics, policy makers, politicians, community members, etc.)? Provide evidence from the article for your identification of the audience.
- Who might be alternate, appropriate audiences? Why? Identify at least two alternate, appropriate audiences and provide links to other literature for your identification of the audiences
- Is the information relevant/interesting/appropriate for the alternate, appropriate audience? How so? Why is this important? Link to other literature (i.e. references to include in your reference list) to support your argument
- Look at the references embedded as hyperlinks in the article and identify those that appraise health promotion interventions. List the first 10 properly, in your references list and identify in a separate table what kind of references these are (peer-reviewed journal article, government or international organisation, webpage, media article, etc).
