In his final address to the Alabama State Senate before being removed on the trail of tears, Chief Eufala spoke endearingly of the white man, saying: I have now become satisfied that they are not unfriendly towards us, but they wish us well…Soon there will be new fires in the west, and we will be there. While Eufala accepted the fate of his people’s removal, other native leaders, such as Tecumseh, spoke of the need to stand their ground. Compare and contrast the writings or speeches of two different Native American leaders, discussing parallels and contrasts in their views regarding how to engage with the white man.
The final literary analysis is a chance to demonstrate what you have learned this semester, while honing your critical and analytical thinking skills. For this assignment, you are asked to either take a deep dive into the work of one author, or pick two to three texts we have read this semester and conduct a “cross-textual” analysis, comparing and contrasting how these texts engage with a specific theme, motif, or archetype. Your essay should include an opening paragraph with an argumentative thesis. You should also include at least three direct quotes from the text/ texts, properly cited, and integrated into your arguments. You may receive up to two points extra credit for each outside, scholarly source you include. Please remember to proofread your work and include a works cited page in MLA format at the end.
