To be successful at this midterm exam, you must: 

1. Make sure your answer follows an essay format. Your essay is at least 500 words and includes an introduction with a thesis statement, a body (one paragraph per composer), and a conclusion.

2. Make sure you are including in your essay at least five (5) of the elements of music studied during this course( rhythm, musical form, pitch, tempo, melody, textures, dynamics) to explain the different music styles of the composers with the accurate title of each composition.

3. Answer the prompt and express your ideas clearly and succinctly using correct grammar and punctuation. 

4. Present your original ideas based on your own studies and do not copy directly from the textbook or any other source.

5. Include YouTube links within your essay to the music you reference. 

 You will be graded by how well you can demonstrate mastery of the learning objectives (PSLO 1, 2, and 6) and you may earn a total of 100 points for this assignment. Points will be awarded according to the rubric for the final exam. 

PSLO 1: Critical Thinking will be assessed through an exemplification essay that illustrates the three different composers. Discuss three (3) composers: one (1) from the Twenty Century period, one (1) from the Romantic period, and one (1) from the Classic period. Explain their relevance to music history.  Your essay should demonstrate your active listening skills using the elements of music studied in this course. Critical thinking skills will be assessed through your ability to identify and organize content, a logical sequence to differentiate facts from opinions, choose and justify points of view, and summarize and synthesize content relevant to the topic. 

 

PSLO 2: Communication Skills will be assessed through your ability to compose an essay with consistent structure: an introduction with a thesis statement, a body (one paragraph per composer), and a conclusion. You should be able to express your ideas completely, with clarity, and following grammatical rules. You should be able to provide examples (links of the audio and video recordings) that illustrate the point of your thesis statement.

 

PSLO 6: Personal Responsibility will be assessed through your decisions in selecting specific composers and examples of music (youtube links of music recordings including for example concertos, symphonies, operas, art songs, sonatas.. ) that are based on your research and that authentically represent each musical style studied in class You will support your selections convincingly, choosing examples that convey specific information, not generalizations.
