You have 3-4 paraphrases here, but that cannot replace direct quotes. When you only paraphrase you ask too much of the reader in terms of trust. You must show as well as tell, and it’s the “showing” that is missing here. To revise this, add 5-8 direct quotes. You might begin by making your paraphrases into direct quotes.

Rhetorical strategies:

Ethos/logos/pathos are used appropriately and consciously to strengthen the argument being made.

I would really like to see some ethos here; this is a topic that affects your generation directly, and yet you treat it at a distance. In doing so, you give up a great rhetorical advantage. The pathos and logos are fine, but I’d like to see YOU more present in the discussion. That could be added to the intro and conclusion.

For this essay, we will be using what we’ve learned and considered to create our own argument. Specifically, you will be writing a 3-5-page, research-based argumentative essay. Your topic and argument are up to you. Provided you can research it and find relevant sources in Miami’s library, I am open to almost anything. You will be working with the same topic again in the remediation project, so choose something that can hold your attention for a few weeks.  

ASSIGNMENT: Write a 3-5-page research-based argumentative essay. This essay should follow one of the three suggested outlines.

 Your choice of outline should reflect the topic and argument. Support your argument with 4-5 sources. These should be the same sources that you introduced in the annotated bibliography.
