writes, “I now knew what being a Negro meant. I could endure the hunger and I
had learned to live with hate. But to feel that there were feelings denied me,
that the very breath of life itself was beyond my reach, that more than
anything else hurt, wounded me. I had a new hunger” (1098). From this quote,
Wright shows his hunger for life and how the joy it brings fuels his writing,
motivating him to fight against the injustices he will face and to build a
better future for himself and other African Americans. Richard Wright was an activist
and a well-known author whose work addressed the harsh realities of racism and
poverty in America. During the 1930s and 1940s, he rose to prominence as an
important advocate in the black literary movement. He was born in 1908 in Roxie,
Mississippi, and had firsthand experiences of African Americans’ injustices and
challenges in the early twentieth century. Wright’s writing gave voice to
individuals who had been silenced and disenfranchised by society. His work
provided an eloquent critique of racial inequalities in America during his
lifetime while simultaneously applauding the resilience and courage of those
who had faced it. Richard Wright’s writing distinguished itself from other
authors because of his unashamed depiction of the brutal reality faced by
African American during the Jim Crow South. Wright’s emphasis on individualism,
personal freedom, and autonomy separates him from other writers of his time,
making his work a strong critique of American society and a tribute to black people’s
