You will need to write 800 words and have three sources, which means in-text citations and works cited. Your exploratory paper is not an argument paper, so please do not argue your issue in this paper. Your exploratory paper is asking you to gather necessary information in order to write an argument paper, but the exploratory paper is not an argument paper. You have five requirements that will give you seven paragraphs. You should not have any less than seven paragraphs or any more than seven paragraphs. [1] An exploratory essay amounts to the work that should be done before we write our argumentative evaluation research paper. In an exploratory essay you will not state a claim (thesis) in the opening paragraph, and then argue with specific proof for that claim throughout the essay. Instead you give an objective analysis of an issue. You should notice that the exploratory paper and your argumentative evaluation research essay are linked together. The work you do for your exploratory paper will be used in your evaluation essay, although the two assignments have different requirements.
[2] The exploratory paper is an objective analysis, and you will have specific requirements for each paragraph with a total of seven paragraphs for the entire essay. I keep mentioning the word objective because you almost need to think of yourself as a reporter. For the exploratory paper you are not arguing a value claim; you are describing and explaining the issue. Below are the requirements you need to develop in order to write a successful paper:
Paragraph 1: Explain the issue
Paragraph 2: Describe the rhetorical situation (historical background information, what events have caused the debate, and who is involved in this controversy)
Paragraphs 3-5: Summarize three positions on the issue along with some reasons for each of them (who is for it, who is against it, and who may take a middle ground: who may be for it or against it but with qualifications)
Paragraph 6: Explain your interest in the issue. Why did you choose the issue? Where in your everyday life do you find this issue?
Paragraph 7: Make a tentative claim that sets forth your position
