This is the term paper to pass the English Grammar 3 course at my university. I had to write a paper for EG2, but I struggled a lot with my professors’ vision and their comments. This is a paragraph summarizing the aim of this paper:
This paper aims to analyze the instances of appraisal resources in Angelina Jolie’s Acceptance Speech, focusing on the three sub-systems within appraisal: Attitude, Graduation, and Evaluation. The relevance of analyzing this speech lies in Jolie’s expression of gratitude and appreciation towards several people in her life, including the members of the Academy, her friends, Louis Zamperini, the cast of “Blood and Honey,” and most importantly, her family. Jolie also appraises her mother’s support and guidance, which makes everything she does possible. She expresses humility and acknowledges the extraordinary artists in the room, including her fellow nominees. Jolie also appraises her responsibility to others, which she learned through her travels and encounters with survivors of war, famine, and rape. She expresses her admiration for the resilience of these people and her desire to be of use to others. The paper will display an analysis of the appraisal resources used in the speech and how they contribute to the overall meaning and impact of the speech. The analysis will also explore the peculiarities of the speech, such as the use of personal anecdotes and the emphasis on the responsibility to others. Additionally, the paper will discuss the importance of analyzing appraisal resources in discourse analysis and how it can contribute to a better understanding of the speaker’s intentions and the audience’s reception.
-The paper is based on the SFL/SFG framework. Halliday should be a major source, as well as Matthiessen, Martin & White, Martin & Rose, David Butt, etc.
