Analyze one work or aspect of either Hawthorne’s or Poe’s works (short stories, novel, and poetry). Write on the works I assigned, as listed in Modules.
Perhaps you could approach your analysis in the form of a question you would like answered — and then attempt to answer it yourself!
For example, I am interested in Poe’s use of the sense of sound over the sense of sight; in fact, seeing is downplayed. Why? Is this the Romantic reaction against the Age of Reason and Science?
I want you to write in first-person point of view (POV). I want you to write things like, “I can’t believe Hester did not openly accuse Dimmesdale of being the father!” I want to believe that you read the works, the primary sources, for yourself, and that you did not google the titles for general info. I want to see struggle, curiosity, wonder.
Integrate (and cite) direct quotes to back up your points. Include Work/s Cited in correct MLA format; points will be deducted for errors. Here yet again is a sample:
