After reading Chapter 4 in The Future of Work by Darrell M. West (LINK), write a journal entry that follows the following format. (Please note that there is an extra step this module that deals with writing discussion questions which you can review by clicking THIS LINK).

1. Summarize chapter 4. How to summarize was covered in last week’s module. There is an example at the bottom of this page. This summary should be at least 3 sentences, but no more that 5 sentences. Keep it short, and to the point.
2. Identify one (1) quote/golden line from the chapter that you feel is the most important, interesting, troublesome, confusing, etc. Write that quote word for word with quote marks around it (also note the page number for later).
3. Next write a 3 or more sentences response to each quote separately you chose, just like a double entry journal that we have done before.
4. Write one key question, designed to promote discussion that you had after reading. You DO NOT need to answer this question.
Here is an example of how one entry would look for a different reading:
Summary: In “You’re Not Alone When You’re on Google” By Jennifer Senior, the author focuses on what she considers a paradox that exists among people when they are using the internet. On the one hand she points out how we are giving up a tremendous amount of privacy by clicking I agree when we download an app, or join a social networking site, which allows these companies to track your movements online for the purpose of advertising. On the other hand she also discusses how it is not reasonable to ask people to give up their devices or remove themselves from the internet, because our lives, both socially, and often economically are dependent on being able to access the internet.
Golden Line: “We claim to treasure it, yet want badly to be known and seen…We’re spooked when the same set of advertisements same set of advertisements tail gate us, yet become furious when our iPhones have no clue where we are when we search for a restaurant” (Senior 1).
Response: A lot of us have social media and are so quick to share how we’re feeling, where we are, what we like to do. We love to record our daily lives. And most don’t see a problem with that until we find out the apps we use in the daily are violating our privacy. However we were so quick to press “agree to the terms and policies” when downloading our apps, and I think it’s funny how we contradict ourselves; it’s only convenient when we want it to be.

Key Question: Give that we both need to use technology to function, but we also put ourselves in potential danger because of a lack of privacy, is there a solution that we, the government, or the companies themselves can take to satisfy both the need to participate online, and the need to feel safe while being online?
