To complete this assignment:
o Writing language and terminology should be on the graduate level with appropriate grammar and spelling. References must be within the past 5 years, using APA 7th editionLinks to an external site. citation and format.
o The assignment will be graded or evaluated using the criterion on the attached rubric. To receive maximum points, students should ensure all items are addressed completely and accurately.
To complete this assignment:
You are an expert Mental Health Nurse Educator participating in a seminar that includes your nursing peers and other healthcare professionals. You have decided to use a case of a pediatric patient to assist with preparing your part of the presentation. Besides the mental illness, all labs are WNL.
 1. Select one of the mental illnesses with the corresponding two medications to complete this assignment using the included case information and template found in the Psychiatry Case
 Actions
. You will be responding to questions as well as comparing/contrasting the two medications. The drugs are not necessarily being administered together. If you use your textbook, it cannot be your sole or primary reference. When answering the questions, your basic pathophysiology descriptions must include the physiological mechanisms underlying what is happening (including at the cellular level) that is causing the disease process and how this connects within the body (including clinical presentation).
2. In addition to the instructions on the template, ensure you are writing in third person, not first person (no “I think” statements for example). Quotes are not allowed; no credit will be given for quotes. You must use, at minimum, two evidence-based research articles or EBP practice guidelines to support your work.
3. Check for plagiarism before submitting: Turnitin Self-Checker
4. Evaluation: The assignment will be graded or evaluated using the criterion on the attached rubric. To receive maximum points, students must follow instructions, ensure all items are addressed completely and accurately.
Problem: Pediatric Mental Illness/Disorder
History of Present Illness:
Lola is a 11 year old who gets into fights at school and home several times a week. She has been known
to break household items by throwing them on the floor or at one of her siblings. In addition, she hits
and kicks her parents when things do not go her way, especially when being disciplined. On one
occasion, she slapped a teacher that resulted in suspension from school for a week. While at school, she
is not able to sit still and frequently moves about the room. Her teacher states she ”struggles to get her
to focus enough to complete assignments” and when she does it is “incomplete or not on time”.
Lola reports feeling sad at times and she believes “no one really likes her”. She is overweight for her age
and snacks constantly. She knows she is not like other kids and wishes she had never been born.
At night, she refuses to go to bed, often demanding a snack although she had one earlier in the evening.
She admits she does not like sleeping in the dark. When she finally goes to bed she wakes up during the
night and has been caught watching television. She reports feeling tired in the morning and has thrown
a tantrum when getting ready to go to school.
Instructions: Read the case above that refers to Lola. Then, select one of the mental illnesses and the
corresponding medications or drug classes (see a thru e below) to complete this assignment using the
included template. Although children may have multiple comorbid disorders, you only need to focus on
the one selected here. Please follow instructions to receive full credit.
a. ADHD and the use of serdexmethylphenidate/dexmethylphenidate (stimulant) and viloxazine (non-
stimulant)
b. Impulsivity in ADHD and the use of clonidine and guanfacine (both alpha 2 agonists)
c. Anxiety and the use of buspirone (anxiolytic) and hydroxyzine (anti-histamine)
d. Aggressive behavior and the use of valproic acid (anti-epileptic) and lithium (mood stabilizer)
e. Insomnia or sleep disorder and the use of melatonin and diphenhydramine (anti-histamine)
Template: This is NOT a paper. Please respond to the following questions using the template. You must
include the questions, not just your responses.
Question Response Reference
1. Using DSM-5, summarize the
criteria for the diagnosis of the
mental illness in pediatrics that
you selected. (10 points)
2. What clinical manifestations
(signs/ symptoms/ abnormal
findings) does Lola have that are
consistent with the mental
illness you chose? (10 points)
3. Discuss the pathophysiology
behind the disorder you
selected. This should take at
least two detailed paragraphs of
what is happening at the cellular
level (25 points)
4. List the various drugs and/or
classes of drugs (if more than
one drug in the class i.e. SSRI)
recommended to treat the
mental disorder you chose and
indicate which are FDA approved
for use in pediatrics for that
mental illness. (10 points)
5. Since you, the expert Mental
Health Nurse Educator, are
familiar with the commonly used
agents to treat the illness you
selected (such as SSRI, SNRI, TCA,
etc), you decide to include
agents that may be less
commonly used in pediatrics.
Research the medications. Then,
compare and contrast the use of
the two drugs or drug classes
included with the mental illness
you selected in “a” thru “e”
above. For example, if you
selected anxiety, you would
compare/contrast buspirone and
hydroxyzine to treat anxiety or if
you chose impulsivity in ADHD,
then compare/contrast the use
of clonidine and guanfacine in
impulsivity, etc. You may include
any information you choose.
Also consider whether the
efficacy data is better for one, or
fewer ADR, lack of compliance-
do patients stop taking it for
some reason, cost, or absolute
contraindications such as age,
other diseases or the
formulation, weight gain or acne
which would be a concern for
youth, etc. (25 points)
6. Based on your
comparison/contrast
information, if you had to
choose between the two drugs
or drug classes you researched in
in #5, which would you select
and why? There is no

must provide adequate and
accurate rationale for your
choice. (10 points)
