Introduction
After learning much basic knowledge about building services engineering, this assignment is
designed to provide an opportunity and mechanism for searching relevant information to
review its current development, and present your results based on a short review article (an
academic article mainly based on research articles). About how to write a good review article,
please refer to the presentation (How to write a good review paper) I gave in the class in Year
2, and the PPT can also be found in the assessment folder of this module after releasing this
assignment brief.
Requirements
You are asked to define your topic from ONE of the three themes below, which means that
you do not need to discuss the whole theme, but focus on a specific area under that theme.
For example, for Theme 3, you do not need to discuss the development of all renewable
energy solutions for buildings, but can focus on one of the available renewable energy
solutions, such as solar energy, even solar panels.
Theme 1: Intelligent or Smart Buildings
Theme 2: Building Energy Assessment
Theme 3: Renewable Energy Solutions for Buildings
The assignment should offer clear description and comment on the topic you selected under
one of the above three themes, including its background and importance, current
development, existing problems and potential future research directions. A good practice of
this assignment should be based on an overview of the development of the selected topic,
but not simply describing individual technologies. It could be supported by simple sketches,
diagrams, photographs and tables to support your statements or summarize your reviewed
information. The report should be fully supported by references, appendices of relevant
material and other evidence related to the topic. The submission must describe the results
from your own review work.
The main contents of the report must follow the structure below:
• Introduction (clearly describe the topic you have selected, i.e. its background and
importance)
• Main Review Body (clearly describe the current development, potential limitations and
future research directions of the topic you have selected)
• Conclusion (summarize the overall report)
