Drawing on at least 3 course readings from the syllabus and at least 2 course themes, explain how we can understand wildfires today as concurrently local and global phenomenon.
Guiding Questions:
- Why is this environmental issue political?
- Who is facing the harshest impacts of these environmental disasters?
- What and who are exacerbating this issue?
- What is the discourse on these wildfires from different populations? (how are different populations reacting to the environmental disasters? You can think about class differences, global south vs. global north, etc).
Some course themes include (but are not limited to): looking at issues from a global-scale; decentering knowledge in the Euro-American academy; agriculture and the environment; global urbanization; politics of the underrepresented; class and race relations; interconnection of global uprisings; the rise of right-wing conservatism; the importance of history in understanding contemporary global issues; cultural differences and conflicts.
