You may select any current issue to develop your researched argument. However, be sure to consider your own biases and the backfire effect when developing a solid topic. Additionally, consider opposing viewpoints as part of the development of the researched argument. All topics must also be approved in advance during the prewriting process (week seven).
One caveat for topic selection, I respect and value your ability to practice your religion, however, topics may not explore moral arguments. If these types of arguments interest you, I highly suggest signing up for one of our philosophy courses that cover moral and religious arguments.
This means topics such as abortion and euthanasia are not allowed as topics. Exploration of topics specific to a religious sect or creed are also not acceptable. Additionally, you may NOT pick any of the following topics: abortion, gun control, the death penalty, or the legalization of recreational marijuana. I don’t think you can add much to the debate over these topics and I’ve read them ad nauseum. Additionally, I will not accept papers with arguments based around conspiracy theories and unverifiable research.
