Think about your life and choose
a life changing or life-shaping event, be it small or large. Describe this memorable event or incident and
state how it (or he/she) affected your life.
The topic question is: how did this event/person/incident change my
life?
Things to keep in mind:
- Focus on recreating the event as clearly as possible
while developing your main idea – for what reason is that happening so
memorable? To what end were you
changed? - Remember to avoid “big” ideas (love, hate, birth,
death) and center on “little” ones.
The smaller the event you pick, the easier it will be for you to
work with. Big topics make for
vague papers. - Because
this writing is about one of your experiences, write from the first-person
point of view, using words like I and me. DO NOT USE SECOND
PERSON: YOU. - Tell
the story as if you are experiencing it, including sensory details to draw
your readers into the story and make them feel a part of it. - Your
story will be easier to understand if you write the events in order from
beginning to end. Using words like first, second, then, next, and finally
will help readers keep track of what happens. - The
last paragraph of your narrative should provide some conclusion, such as
what you learned from an experience. Be careful not to leave your readers
“hanging,” wondering what the end of the story is.
