There are so many diverse cultures, religions, and languages that make up the Canadian
population that we often struggle with defining our Canadian identity. If we can’t decide what it
means to be Canadian, how can we choose one symbol or one animal that tells the world, “This
is Canada”? Our country has seen many changes since 1867. Should we continue to honour our
national symbols or should our national symbols evolve to reflect our modern identity?
Students will write an editorial that expresses their opinion on the following topic:
Which animal would be a more suitable choice for Canada’s
national animal than the beaver?
The purpose of your editorial is to be persuasive and make your reader believe the same
thing you do. Your word choice and tone should sound convincing and confident but do not be
afraid of using humour to make your editorial more memorable.

Your editorial should be typed, double-spaced, 12-pt font, and a minimum of 600 words.
Informal language is allowed, but you should have proper spelling and sentence structure. You
must also attach a Works Cited page at the end of your editorial, listing all the sources you used
in correct MLA format.
