INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSIGNMENT:
The case study assignment is designed to test your ability to conduct an individual project, meet goals and deadlines, locate gaps or problems in existing knowledge, draw upon appropriate research tools to address gaps and situate your findings within an existing body of research.
Select an area of focus for developing your own case study about power and resistance. A case study is a detailed examination of a given phenomenon, e.g., Russia invading Ukraine in 2022; or nationwide protests against gender and sexual violence in 2021; or Voice to Parliament; climate change protests.
Alongside sources of data such as books and journal articles, you will need to use one other research method to collect your data. For example, you might want to use one of the following:
-
Collect images or photographs, be it past or present, or use publicly available images of art.
-
Archival/historical research in the State Library of South Australia or The Centre for Democracy.
-
Collect relevant policy or legislation to explain why something happened in the past, and how this influences the present.
-
Collect and analyse sources of newsprint media as well as social media.
-
Informal interviews with no more than 2-3 people.
-
Sources of popular culture such as film, comics and cartoons.
The purpose of using two methods of collecting data is to make sure your project is grounded in cultural and political complexity of the world “out there” so to speak.
For your case study, you will need to: (a) analyse the collected data, (b) develop a coherent argument based on the data, and (c) integrate existing literature and theoretical approaches to analyse the data and demonstrate the validity of your argument. Description is good, but analysis is better.
You will be assessed on:
-
Essay structure, which clearly identifies a research problem. • Critical engagement with the researched material.
-
Quality of data analysis, and its integration with existing literature and theoretical approaches.
-
Clarity of argumentation.
-
Clarity of expression/grammar.
-
Quality of references (minimum of 15 references, a balance of books, journal articles and relevant websites).
THEREFORE:
I have chosen to look into the innovative ways of protest in regards to global warming around the world. E.g; the van gogh soup climate protest, actor Rainn Wilson changing his name, cyclists grounding private jets at Amsterdam airport, and the disproportionate punishment for Australian’s protesting without permits. Using the Australian Climate Change Bill 2022 to address how this form of resistance could work to benefit this cause, or not? Using similar historical moments of resistance to determine what kind of resistance is necessary to finally make an effortable change.
