Introduction paragraph: Start with a hook to grab the reader’s attention. Then, discuss the work/author briefly.  Lastly, provide your thesis at the end of the paragraph. Be sure to underline your thesis. (about 6-8 sentences)

Body paragraph 1: Start with a topic sentence that directly references your motif. For example: The motif of … is first emphasized by the author when . . .  Then, provide evidence in the form of a short, direct quote (1-2 line quote) from the author.  Next, analyze that quote in support of your thesis.  In other words, why did the author choose those exact words in that exact order? How do the word choices and arrangement of ideas support your motif analysis? Analyze the quote in your own words and relate that analysis back to your motif.  Lastly, provide another direct quote from the author, if more content is needed, and repeat the process. (about 6-8 sentences)

Body paragraph 2: Repeat the process as shown in Body paragraph 1 – above.  Topic sentence / quote / analysis of quote.   (about 6-8 sentences)

Body paragraph 3: Repeat the process as shown in Body paragraph 1 – above.  Topic sentence / quote / analysis of quote.  (about 6-8 sentences)

Body paragraph 4:  Repeat the process as shown in Body paragraph 1 – above.  (about 6-8 sentences)

Conclusion paragraph: Sum-up your thesis and main, supporting points in fresh words.  Leave the reader with an impactful, final thought to consider concerning the literature and your motif.  (about 6-8 sentences)

• Provide 1-2 short (1-2) line quotes from the works in each body paragraph as evidence.

• Do not quote more than three lines of the original text at a time. Four lines of text, or more, require block quotes.  Please do not use block quotes on Essay 2.

• When you “quote” the author’s words directly, use “quote marks,” provide his, or her, LAST name, and give a page number where your quote can be found.

For example:
