Describe key legislation pertaining to manual handling practice. You will need to show an understanding of current legislation and how this relates to manual handling and the healthcare profession. You may want to consider the legislation and other relevant legislation such as Health and Safety at Work Act(1974), and Manual Handling Operations Regulations (1992) amended (2002).
Explain safe and appropriate manual handling techniques. It is important that manual handling is carried out correctly to ensure the safety of patients and staff alike, so you may want to consider such techniques (although not exhaustive) as safe bed transfer, use of a hoist in a safe manner and banana boards.
Describe when different personal protective equipment (PPE) would be used. You will need to think about when PPE should be used giving examples of different types such as gloves, and masks. You could also include PPE that has been used/is being used for COVID patients.
Describe an infection control policy for a highly infectious disease for example COVID, EBOLA, OR MRSA. You will firstly need to show an understanding of what is meant by an infection control policy and then choosing an infectious disease of your choice, you will need to consider what might be in a policy to help managing the patient and the spread of the disease. You may also want to look at the measure that are put in place for both staff and patients. To enhance this further also consider the NICE guidelines that will and can inform policy.
Evaluate the role of infection control legislation and policy in the management of disease control. There are many legislations, policies and guidelines that inform infection control legislation and how they combat the spread of disease. You will need to look at least TWO legislation such as the Public Health (Control of Diseases)Act 1984, Control of Substance Hazardous to Health (COSHH) 2002, and Food Safety Act 1990 (This list is not exhaustive). You will also need to look at and consider guidelines from NICE and WHO.
Explain effective cleaning and waste management methods. You will need to show an understanding of the different ways in which spillages such as urine or blood should be cleaned, as well as being aware of sharps bins and how these should be used correctly.
