Our final texts in this course; the film 500 Days of Summer, directed by Marc Webb, the story “Cat
Person” by Kristen Roupenian, the story Brokeback Mountain by Annie Proulx and the film Midsommar, directed by Ari Aster
-The texts above all explore modern romantic relationships through different perspectives,
narratives and genres.
-In this essay, you must draw parallels between how three of the stories given explore the
tumultuous patterns of dating and develop an argument that answers this question:
Why is dating so horrific?
Is it….Ego? Control? Expectations? Stagnation? Risk-aversion? Co-dependency? Romance Novels? Patriarchy? Power? Communication?
-Try to create a narrow and creative response to this question that will allow you to build interesting
parallels between all three texts.
-We will explore various ideas in class that can serve as a springboard for your own unique argument
Requirements:

One OUTSIDE non-fiction source or an additional text to analyze

Original analysis of one symbol central to the text’s argument

Netting to develop and define a term central to your argument

At least two quotes from “Cat Person” and concrete description of at least one scene
from each film.

A developed essay with all essential building blocks: introduction, thesis claim, at least
two body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

MLA format including a Works Cited page.
