Evaluation
Successful papers exhibit the following:
– An understanding of the structure of an academic essay (introduction –> body paragraphs –> conclusion)
– A clearly articulated thesis
– Research that supports the thesis. Does each body paragraph address the larger point? is evidence used to support ideas?
– Engagement with primary (object/artifact, work of art, garments, buildings, personal interviews) and quality secondary sources
– Analytical thinking. How is the evidence interpreted in light of your point? Has the writer engaged with the material/visual/textual evidence in depth?
– Has the writer used proper citation format in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style?
