Extended Argumentative Essay
Task Description
Students will be required to select a business topic from a list of topics; subsequently, they will need to write a 1,000-1,250-word extended argumentative essay reporting on the results of library research, using at least four credible, accurate, reasonable, and supported sources (books and journal articles, following Harvard style). No more than 15% of the paper can be direct quotation; the rest should be a combination of appropriately referenced paraphrase and summary of the sources and the writer’s views and own ideas.
The paper must contain the following structural elements:
· Introduction (background to the question, thesis statement, structural overview, definitions)
· Two argumentative paragraphs
· One refutation paragraph
· Conclusion
· Reference list (not included in the word-count)

The assignment will be assessed based on the following criteria (see the grid on Moodle):
• Understanding of material (25%)
• Analysis (30%)
• Source Use (15%)
• Structure (20%)
• Language and mechanics (10%)
Papers shorter than 1,000 and longer than 1,250 words lose 10 points. Papers shorter than 850 words fail automatically. Papers where there are two discrepancies between the references used in and after text receive 0% on “Language and Mechanics”. Papers where there are more than two discrepancies between the references used in and after text fail automatically.
