The development of nursing knowledge takes a lot of
time and effort from the people involved. Additionally, it can be acquired
using countless ways, and one way is through nursing theories. There are
theorists who have found it useful to come up with sources of information on
ways of reforming nursing practices. One major types of nursing theories are
grand theories. In the paper, the objective is to explain an ongoing
development in the use of grand nursing theories and their place in nursing
practice.

The

the Obsolescence of Nursing Grand Theories for Today’s Practice and Research

There are two categories of nursing theories which
include middle-range nursing theories and grand theories. However, all of them
offer basic knowledge regarding varied approaches that are beneficial in
empowering nurses in the present and future. Nursing theories help nurses in
explaining some of the things that they do for their patients, together with
the reasons why they do them. In nursing, grand theories are frequently used,
and one example is Ida Jean Orlando’s nursing process theory. The theories are
always focused on particular concepts that, in some cases, are very complex
 (Jairath et al., 2018).
But, they do not issue guidance on individual nursing interventions.

Grand nursing theories offer a large area of concepts
that are linked to people, the environment, nursing, and health. Furthermore,
they are formed from the experiences of theorists at different times in
history. The theories have a lot of fundamental concepts which advanced to cover
a lot of approaches. Therefore, they became broad and complex regarding their
scope. Most grand nursing theories provide information concerning nursing
practice and the kind of care that needs to be offered to patients. As a
result, they have been integrated into many procedures. They have also been
applied in coming up with strategies that can assist nurses in learning a
number of skills which can be basic or complex.

Also, grand theories allow nurses to gain the required
experience that can be applied in a lot of real-life situations. There have
also been instances in which researchers have used the concepts from the
nursing theory as a source of guidance in coming up with steps or in the
evaluation of findings. However, grand theories are slowly becoming outdated
because of technological advancements and other unavoidable factors
 (Olsson et al., 2020). They
are also becoming unreliable in solving problems that professionals believed
they could solve.

One of the major reasons is the existence of new and
improved theories that have been developed. Some of those theories have the
capability of serving society in a better way than grand nursing theories
formed several years ago. Moreover, the medical field is overburdened by many
pieces of research and discoveries that need concrete sources of guidance
 (Mathieson et al., 2019).
This makes it hard for some of the popular grand theories to be used in
building an efficient healthcare society.

                                                                                        Conclusion

Nurses and other specialists located in the medical
field should find ways through which they can implement their strategies to
suit the present needs. It is also beneficial for them to amend their beliefs
as they will remain updated on all of the current healthcare needs and
requirements. Grand nursing theories and important, but it is also necessary to
refer to middle-range theories as well. Taking such an approach helps in
getting relevant information by using different sources.
