Purpose:
Essay #1 gave you a chance to try out an important form of critical thinking: close
reading. Essay #2 allowed you to develop a position on a controversial subject. Essay #3
will now give you an opportunity to bring together all of the writing, reading, and critical
thinking skills we have discussed, as well as the research skills we will explore, to create
a research paper on a literary text.
In a 1500-1750 word, thesis-driven essay, create an argument about one of Fight
Club’s themes using close reading of your primary text and plenty of strong evidence
from different, appropriate secondary sources (at least 3, and at least one being from a
peer-reviewed journal).
