The response papers are worth 25 points each. Here is how the points distribute:
First paragraph: 5 points
I look for a clear statement of the overall argument of the paper in the first paragraph. If it is absent,
even if the rest of the paper is high quality, points will be deducted.
Organization logic and writing of the paper: 10 points
I expect a good paper to be written in correct English and to flow logically throughout. By logical flow, I
mean that different components of the main argument should not contradict one another without a
good explanation and that the evidence brought to bear should all logically support the main argument.
In general, I much prefer a logically structured paper that supports an outlandish argument to a paper
filled with “common wisdoms” that are tied together loosely without detailed justifications.
Usage of readings: 5 points
I expect a good paper to demonstrate clear understanding of multiple readings and to bring readings to
bear in making arguments.
Originality: 5 points
A good paper would demonstrate overall originality in the argument or in proposing empirical tests to
settle important debates in the literature, or both. Originality of arguments often arise when disparate
literatures are brought into dialogue with one another.
the paper is a theoretical or empirical critique of some aspect of the literature, which should be between 7 and 10 pages (double-space) long. Besides critiquing the shortfall of a single work or a body of works, a good response paper would also suggest new ways of thinking about an issue, new hypotheses, and/or new empirical tests that can settle a debate.
